Selecting a Credit Card Merchant Processor
When I first started out in the online retail business, I was so busy worrying about the many aspects of running a business that I hastily selected a merchant processor without true due diligence. That merchant processor is EVO Platinum.
I must warn you that this is the WORST merchant processor. EVO Platinum has some of the most expensive rates in the industry, a 3 year contract with a $295 cancellation fee, charges your account with fees without telling customers, and withholds payment to the merchant. So if EVO Platinum is so bad why did I choose them?
The credit card processing industry is complicated and deceptive. EVO Platinum like many other processors like to advertise the "qualified" credit card processing rate. This is the rate that merchants charge if a person is present (i.e. a retailer at a physical location). EVO Platinum's own website says there are no long term contracts or cancellation fees. However, there contract that you see is very deceptive. They charge $295 cancellation fee for early closure based on "terms and condition" that was never provided. Furthermore, a BBB website of the business revealed that EVO Platinum is so awful and full of complaints that they got delisted from BBB.
So what do you look for in a merchant processor if you are a internet retailer?
1) low mid-qualified rates (online purchases using debt, credit and rewards cards)
2) low non-qualified rates (online puchases using business credit cards/government cards)
3) no cancellation fees on your contract
4) an easy to read merchant statement, ask for a sample
5) gateway fee, every merchant requires and shouldn't be more than $10/month
6) monthly paper statement, also required and shouldn't be more than $9/month
Final word, stay away from EVO Platinum. I learned the lesson the hard way.
